Founded in 2015 by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Lowell Bergman at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Investigative Studios is now an independent non-profit 501(c)3, continuing a rich history of producing award-winning films and educating the next generation of investigative filmmakers.
Our Mission
To rouse the most dynamic lever of change:
A WELL-INFORMED PUBLIC
Investigative Studios advances the mission of investigative journalism by producing, funding, and fiscally sponsoring compelling, objective, and high-quality documentary films and podcasts. We go beyond the headlines to uncover truth, amplify voices that have been silenced or ignored, and challenge distorted narratives and misinformation in today’s complex social and political landscape.
INEQUITY * ABUSE * INJUSTICE * CORRUPTION
Every production upholds the core principles of nonpartisan investigative reporting. Our work is grounded in rigorous research, meticulous fact-checking, and a commitment to presenting all sides of a story with fairness, historical context, and factual integrity.
Investigative Studios is not beholden to any ideology, interest group, or type of funder; we maintain full transparency about all significant contributors. Our productions are intended for broad public audiences and are aired on major, nonpartisan, respected platforms.
We support and invest in the next generation of investigative journalists through targeted grants. Our grantees, emerging directors and producers with limited resources, gain financial support, mentorship from seasoned advisors, and access to our broad network of professionals across the private and public sectors.
We Produce. We Mentor. We Sponsor.
